Department of Sociology : Our Role

The role of the Department of Sociology at Hampton University is unique. It provides both traditional and African-American approaches to the study of society. Since the work of W. E. B. DuBois, E. Franklin Frazier, and Charles S. Johnson, studying the experiences of blacks and other people of color has become more prevalent. The issues that confront Americans require scholars with intellectual and pragmatic skills as well as commitments to transcend the conventional models of thinking of practice inherited from the founders of our nation.

The Department of Sociology is committed to the study of the interplay between race, class, gender, status, and age with concentration in the areas of:

  • Race
  • Class
  • Gender
  • Criminology
  • International studies
  • Social policy
