The Department of Health, Physical Education, & Recreation (HPER) offers nationally recognized professional preparation programs for majors and a physical activity program for non-majors to fulfill the general education requirement for physical education. The Department offers undergraduate degree programs leading to the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Physical Education with teacher endorsement in Health and Physical Education at the PreK-12 levels, in Sport Management, and in Kinesiology. Physical activity courses for the general education requirement include a wide variety of lifetime sports activities.

The overall goal of the Department is to provide an environment in which each student can pursue professional development and wellness for life through classroom activities, sports skills practice, and extracurricular activities designed to enhance intellectual development, physical fitness, emotional strength, and social well- being.

The department has further enhanced its mission of professional preparation for its majors through numerous affiliations and certification programs. Hampton University HPER achieved approval in the ERP (Education Recognition Programs) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association.   Hampton University is the only HBCU in the country that has recognized programs in both personal training and strength/conditioning. By being a part of this program the HPER department offers a curriculum to help students to be successful when taking the CPT (Certified Personal Training) exam and/or the CSCS (Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist) certification. Hampton University also is an American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) approved site to host the EP-C (Exercise Physiology Certification).  The department is approved through ACSM as an Exercise is Medicine program. The program consists of collaborations between HPER, Student Activities, and the Health Department on campus.  The department also houses a chapter of Phi Epsilon Kappa Fraternity – the professional fraternity for kinesiology majors. The fraternity’s focus includes community service and offering educational experiences to student majors.
