Autumn Marshall
Spanish Minor
When first matriculating to Hampton University as a freshman, I possessed
about 10 years worth of Spanish classroom training. I was placed in a special
focus Spanish group in the second grade and although I had a strong foundation
in the language, I lacked direction and purpose. Following the foreign language
requirements of HU, I registered for an advanced Spanish class and was immediately
encouraged by my professor to immerse myself in the various language opportunities
available. My Spanish professor actually became my unofficial academic advisor.
Although my major was Marketing, I was involved in activities that included
Alpha Mu Gamma, the foreign language honor society, advanced Spanish for Business
classes and eventually a 3 month study broad experience in Guadalajara, Mexico.
Today I am a Business Relationship Manager for the fourth largest US bank.
When applying for jobs in college, my foreign language background automatically
made me stand out amongst other applicants. Upon graduation, I had an offer
from just about every company I applied to. Taking the time to learn an actual
language also means learning a culture as well. This experience has rewarded
me the ability to have an open mind, gain international experience, and great
ease in working with various cultures. I plan on pursuing an advanced degree
abroad within the next 2 or 3 years. The experience will give me the WOW factor
I am sure will assist me if I apply to an Ivy League Institute thereafter or
if I decide to head a department that involves any sort of cultural or international
experience.
