Dr. Saundra Nelson Cherry is an assistant professor in the Graduate Program in Counseling and is the Chair for the Grievance Committee within the College of Continuing Studies and Division of Professional Education ay Hampton University. She also serves on the University Research Committee. Dr. Cherry is a native of Newport News, Virginia. She was married to the late Gregory Cherry, founder and curator of the James A. Fields House (Whittaker Memorial Hospital). Saundra Cherry is a member of Living Waters Christian Fellowship, where she serves as an Elder and Ministry Leader for the Evangelism (Assistant Living) Ministry. Dr. Cherry received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Occupational Education from Virginia Commonwealth University. She received a Master of Science Degree in Dental Hygiene (Dental Management Concentration) -from the University of Maryland at Baltimore and a Master of Divinity Degree from the Samuel D. Proctor School of Theology Virginia Union University. In 2000, Dr. Cherry completed her Chaplain Residency (Clinical Pastoral Education) at Riverside Regional Medical Center and her Doctorate of Ministry Degree (Clinical Pastoral Education) from Regent University. Dr. Cherry has received leadership training in Crisis Intervention Training (1st responders), the Sorensen Institute Candidate Training Program and from the Leadership Institute of the Virginia Peninsula Chamber of Commerce. Dr. Cherry has garnered the following awards: Minority Scholarship from University of Maryland at Baltimore (1988), Recipient of Honors Award Magna Cum Lauda (1999), YWCA Virginia Peninsula Women of Distinction Award for Human Services/Non-profit (2009) and the Women of the Tribe (2010). She is a member of the City of Newport News Commemoration Advisory Commission and City of Newport News Keeping Our Kids Safe Initiative, serves as chair of the City of Newport News Planning District I Task Force; as well as a current member of Pastoral Care Committee at Riverside Regional Medical Center, Newport News NAACP and facilitator for City of Newport News Juvenile Services YOGI Program. Dr. Cherry is a Candidate for Newport News City Council in the General Election on May 4, 2010, South District 3, seat B.
