Teacher Education, Secondary (Grades 6-12)
The Department of Education, in collaboration with the Graduate College at Hampton University, offers a fifth-year initial teacher licensure program in which students earn a Master’s in Teaching degree. Students complete a bachelor's degree in a core content area before proceeding on to professional education coursework and clinical training during a fifth year of study. Students interested in teaching at the secondary levels (6-12) may choose a major in one of the areas listed below:
Students must hold a bachelor’s degree in one of the majors listed above. Admission requirements include, but are not limited to: 2.5 GPA and successful completion of the general test of the GRE and three letters of recommendation (one from the undergraduate department chair) and other required standardized tests.
Students completing bachelor's degrees from other universities may also apply for admission to the Graduate Program in Education. These students may be required to enroll in prerequisite courses to meet the Virginia Department of Education requirements.
